Congratulations Tova Granowitz

LYA students participated in an “Ice Cream for Books” reading challenge between the months of February and March run by LYA Librarian, Mrs. Joanne Meyer. Students in first through eighth grade were eligible to participate in the Reading Challenge by reading five grade level books. Any student who participated was invited to a special Ice Cream Party that was held on Monday, April 23. Over thirty students were successful readers and attended the ice cream celebration. Mrs. Meyer provided an extra challenge for her enthusiastic readers. Each student who read twenty books between February and March were entered into a special drawing for a $50 visa card. LYA congratulates Tova Granowitz for winning the prize during the raffle drawing at the ice cream party. “I am very proud of my enthusiastic readers”, commented Mrs. Joanne Meyer. “Ice Cream for Books was a great way to support my students’ love of reading.”

Learn-a-thon Begins at LYA

We are just one week into the annual LYA Learn-a-thon and boy are there many students studying. It is a sight to behold. This Shabbat you can earn extra Learn-a-thon tickets by saying Perek Gimel, (Ch. 3) of Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers). LYA is looking forward to the comments from all their students who learned Pirkei Avot.

Well done day, soldiers. It was hard to find you in all that camouflage. Your LYA Camouflage Soldiers came out great. Congratulations to Yossi Kosofsky upon winning the paper airplane race.

Are you ready for your next mission? Of course you are. As we are all soldiers in Hashem's army, let us make him proud.

Preschool & Kindergarten - Tell your parents some aleph bet letters from a Siddur

First Grade: Read or recite your favorite tefillah (prayer)

Second - Middle School - Learn some pesukim from Chumash or Navi with your parents.

LYA soldiers had loads of fun on the second day of Registration Week. There were so many wonderful army hats. Students and staff used their creativity. We all heard army stories. Thank you. Mrs. Meyer, for choosing them. Capture the Flag was fun. Thank you Middle School boys for helping us play.

Would you like to earn more soldiers? Well, tonight tell your parents about a Jewish leader you have learned about in the Torah. Tell your parents the habits that they used and when. Parents please post the name of the Leader and habits they used.

Army Day was loads of fun. Congratulations to 5th grade upon receiving an extra 50 soldiers during our soldier hunt. Buddies earned soldiers for writing letters to our troops. Tomorrow you can all earn soldiers by wearing special hats that show how you serve in the LYA army. Use your imagination. You can also earn soldiers by completing this next blog activity.

Tell someone in your family a dvar torah and have them post what they learned from you. Happy Torah Learning.

Are you ready to join the LYA army? As a soldier you know that you are also in the Army of Hashem. You can earn extra soldiers by completing the following missions that will be posted on this blog.

Mission #1: Say or sing as many 12 pesukim that you know to you parents. Have your parents post how many you say and you will receive soldiers in school for your class.

“So You Think You Can Sing!!!”

The karaoke contest will have our administrators competing on Friday, March 23 in a singing competition during which they will sing 3 songs. One song is a song of their choice. LYA parents and students may help choose the genre for a duet and solo. Please vote on the blog. We would also like for our amazingly spirited administrators to come in costume. Let us know how they should be dressed.

LYA was at the JCC Carnival

LYA middle school students ran a "Test Your Purim Knowledge" booth at the JCC Purim Carnival. Thank you Rabbi Wolff for organizing the booth. A great time was had by all the LYA families seen here. Rabbi Wolff was on TV and many great prizes were won. LYA prides itself on being involved in community events. Happy Purim.

LYA congratulates 8th Grader, Ben Muhlmann, upon qualifying to represent LYA and participate in the Massachusetts State level of the National Geographic Bee that will be held at Worcester State University on Friday, March 30, 2012. In order to qualify for the state level, Ben completed a written exam after winning the LYA Geography Bee in January. LYA is proud of Ben and looks forward to hearing more about the state competition.

The Lights Went Out Again

Did you know that the lights went off again in Longmeadow? Well, when the lights went off at LYA on Tuesday around 4:00 p.m., the LYA staff was busy at their monthly staff meeting. Being in the dark did not stop their important meeting. The staff continued their meeting and was very productive without lights. Special thanks to Mrs. Zolotor’s daughter, who saved the day with a flash light on her iPod. The meeting ended with a bang as the lights went back on. This picture was taken in the dark. You will need to contact Dr. Kupperman or Rabbi Wolff personally and ask them about the guest Teddy Bear.

Shop 'Till You Drop

LYA has very active kids and on Sunday, December 4, twenty children participated in the Rachel’s Table Foodraiser. Together with community members, they shopped ‘till they dropped at Big Y and all the food they bought went to the needy. After the foodraiser, it was back to LYA for a gift wrapping session of toys for Chanukah. These gifts will be sent to children whose parents are incarcerated. LYA kids are truly active kids who think about others. Rabbi Cohen did a wonderful job organizing this program and would like to thank the following people for carpooling and chaperoning the event: Chani Cohen, Emunah Garfield, Rochel Leah Kosofsky, Suzanne Muhlmann, Sue Scott, Edy Winokur and Faigie Wolff. Leaders of the Month - October

LYA congratulates its October Leaders of the Month. These students showed leadership using the quality of Respect. Leaders of the Month receive certificates, as well as a special treat of eating lunch with Dr. Kupperman. Dr. Kupperman brings special prizes and students practice tongue twisters. In addition three lucky students were chosen as ticket winners. They will receive a special ice cream dessert and eat that with Dr. Kupperman.

Turning Storm into Win Win

How do you turn a storm into a win-win? For eighth grade student Gavriel, the answer was simple. Draw how LYA students were leaders. The picture above does not do justice to the awesome mural that now graces the hall of LYA. In the mural one can see the many ways that LYA students and their families showed Leadership during the storm. Some examples were: helping shovel, allowing friends to come in for warm food and showers, cutting trees and offering friendship. Stop in and see this beautiful work of art and leadership.

The Heat is On

The Heat is on at LYA and it was back to business. However, it was not business as usual. LYA opened its doors and invited in visitors whose schools had no power. LYA students were hospitable to nine students who took advantage of LYA's offer. These students visited Preschool, Kindergarten, Third, Fourth and Middle School classes. Guess what? LYA's character trait for November is Hospitality.
