We must tell you that the weather today was absolutely beautiful. Our first stop was to Ganei Ha’Nadiv, Gardens of the Generous. Now you might be wondering who these gardens are in honor of. Our fellow travelers knew the answer since they learned about it this year when they studied the 5 Aliyot to Israel. Nitzan told them the gardens were planted in honor of a special benefactor who donated much money to Zichron Yakov. Our fellow travelers knew that could only mean Baron Edmund Rothschild.

Baron Rothschild was really moved after the Kishinev pogrom and decided to assist the Jews living then in Israel, which was called Palestine. He donated money and resources to assist the people to cultivate the land. The first olim who came from Europe began planting potatoes and when their crop yielded it nothing, it was clear they needed agricultural assistance. Rothschild believed in providing the people with tools for success. One of the 1st things he provided was a well for water.

The gardens are a beautiful memorial for this philanthropic man.  The plants and trees are a reminder of how much Rothschild cared for the agricultural success of Israel. One is not allowed to walk on the grass. There are ample places to view the flowers. It was cool to see real carob trees growing.

Baron Rothschild was one of 5 brothers. Their father instilled in them morals, values and tzedakah. Additionally, their father emphasized that when all 5 work together, they are united. Upon entry way one can view the Rothschild coat of arms. One picture is a hand holding 5 arrows, symbolizing this idea.

In the gardens is the burial site of Baron Rothschild. We walked in to see the simple yet respectful site. Th  Rothschild  Foundation is still actively assisting Israel in the same manner today. It is no wonder that Baron Edmund Rothschild is known as the Father of the Yishuv.
